Can Music Increase Your Motivation?

Picture
Have you ever noticed that music has the ability to connect directly to the soul? Simply playing different genres of music can transform your emotions into whatever the artist wants to convey. The sung word seems more powerful and resonates with us much more than the written word. The opening notes of a familiar tune can instantly render you happy, sad, relaxed or energised and can even trigger nostalgia from years gone by. We choose music to relax ourselves at the end of a busy day, choose music that we want to dance and celebrate to, but you may not have realised we can also harvest the power of music to energise ourselves to work harder during a workout.

By combining the (high beats per minute) music that you like with your usual exercise you can actually engage your central nervous system. Your mood will be elevated and your concentration and coordination will be improved. Music can raise the pulse, relieve boredom and fatigue and increase your energy levels, and hence help maximise the benefits from your normal workout. The key here is to choose music that makes you feel good.

To help get you started, the iTunes Store has hundreds of albums specifically designed to help your workout. There’s music for runners, gym goers, spinning classes, joggers and cyclists to name but a few; try searching for ‘workout’ in the iTunes store. Better still; why not look through your own music library to create a playlist of your favourite energising tracks.

If you are sceptical about the power of music to improve your fitness performance and stamina then maybe it’s time you tried it for yourself.
